Why Build A List
Building a list of people for the purpose of email marketing is what every aspiring Internet Marketer should do. Brick and mortar businesses should also capture emails of people to email to. Think of list building as building a customer base to sell to. The more people you have on your list the more repeat customers you will have for your business. Customers that you can market to over and over and sometimes for years to come. The more people the marketer gets on their list the more money they will make.
When starting out most beginning internet marketers fail to realize the power of list building and skip this crucial step. Even if you are just starting out in Internet Marketing you should be taking steps to start your list. Another thing that people fail to realize is that by having a list is actually having a traffic source to your website available to you all the time. And if you think about it, this is the best traffic that you can possibly ever get. Targeted traffic to your website of people who know who you are and trust your recommendations. An Internet Marketers list is the most valuable business asset that they have.
Paid Advertising vs List Building
Paid advertising methods is a great way to make sales if done properly. Better then using free classifieds. But paid advertising should not be the only method to use to make sales.
Some problems with advertising
One big problem is the cost. You can easily fork out hundreds of dollars every week for advertising. Also some of the things going against you in advertising is the fact that people are being bombarded almost every minute of the day with advertisements from every conceivable medium like TV , radio, print publications, billboards, signs and the Internet.
All these millions of advertisement messages is your competition ! Most people are already conditioned to ignore advertisements. This is what you are up against when advertising. Advertising does work but it must be done on a continual bases. The minute you stop paying for advertising, you stop making sales.
Advantage of List building
Any business owner should always advertise as much as possible. But if you are an Internet marketer the main emphasis should be to advertise your squeeze page. Here is an example of a great squeeze page
Instead of trying to make a sale first right off the bat, it is better in the long run to get the potential customers email address first. The advantage of email marketing is that even though you might not get the sale, you still have a way to market to the same potential customer in the future. When you capture an email address of a customer or potential customer, then you have an opportunity to communicate messages to that customer on a continual bases. This line of communication between business owner and customer can be open for many years producing many sales.
The smart business owner should provide to the people on his list some good reasons for people to read their email messages that are coming from him.. In his emails he should provide benefits for his readers.
Some of these benefits are:

- Important product news
- Early bird specials
- Product reviews
- Great tips etc.
If done properly the business owner /Internet marketer will, through his email campaigns, build a relationship with his customers, establish credibility, build trust and even loyalty.
List building can be very lucrative
Millions of dollars have been made by marketers using email marketing. Marketers like Mike Filsaime of the Butterfly Marketing fame and others have a list of people amounting to 200,000 or more. That means that every time they recommend a product to their list they make thousands of dollars just for sending an email. Some times the profits can be in the million dollar range. Of course this is the pay off for doing what it takes to build that list of 200,000 people.
Summing it up
List building / email marketing should be on the top of the list of things to do to for Internet Marketers and also for brick and mortar businesses. The sooner you start building your list and get your email marketing campaigns set up, the sooner you will be making money on a steady bases.
When building your list using capture/squeeze pages, use auto responders to automate your email messages to your subscribers. When sending emails to your list, don’t just bombard them with sales messages but build a relationship with your readers and send them valuable and helpful information to build trust and credibility..
You do not need a huge list to be profitable. A list of 200 to 500 people can create an income. The more people on your list the more money you will make.
